Pneumonia and atmospheric sulphate deposit.

چکیده

THE fact that pneumonia mortality is higher in urban areas suggests that air pollution has some effect upon the incidence of this disease. To test such a possibility, pneumonia mortality-rates were calculated for the whole populations of fifty-three cotinty and Metropolitan boroughs in England, Scotland, and Wales, from the Registrar General's annual statistical reviews for the 5-year period 1950-54. These rates were then plotted against the pH of the precipitation, and the atmospheric deposit of tar, ash, other combustible material, and sulphate, using data for single stations and periods within these boroughs taken from the 27th report of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research on the investigation of atmospheric pollution (1955). From this preliminary study it was evident that the only one among these components of air pollution showing any obvious relation to pneumonia mortality was sulphate deposit, which presumably depends mainly upon the emission of sulphur dioxide from burning coal.

Geology and mineralogy of the Haft Sandogh alunite deposit (NW Takestan): implication for alumina and potassium extraction

The Haft Sandogh alunite deposit is located in the northwest of Takestan (about 60 Km west of Qazvin), and is a part of large Takand alunite deposit. Mineralogical and field study reveal that there is a zonation in the alteration zones of the Haft Sandogh deposit and surrounding area including silica zone in the central part, and quartz-alunite (quartz alunite), kaolinite and propylitic formed ...

Public Health BRONCHITIS AND THE ACIDITY OF URBAN PRECIPITATION

THE incidence of bronchitis is uncommonly high in Britain, especially in urban areas during winter; and it has been conjectured that air pollution is at least partly responsible. In this paper I report a correlation between bronchitis mortality and the acidity of urban precipitation. The mortality-rates for bronchitis were calculated from the Registrar General’s annual statistical reviews for t...

Is white clover able to switch to atmospheric sulphur sources when sulphate availability decreases?

Sulphur (S) is one of the very few nutrients that plants can absorb either through roots as sulphate or via leaves in a gas form such as SO2 or H2S. This study was realized in a non-S-enriched atmosphere and its purpose was to test whether clover plants can increase their ability to use atmospheric S when sulphate availability decreases. A novel methodology measuring the dilution of (34)S provi...

Anaerobic methanotrophy and the rise of atmospheric oxygen.

In modern marine sediments, the anoxic decomposition of organic matter generates a significant flux of methane that is oxidized microbially with sulphate under the seafloor and never reaches the atmosphere. In contrast, prior to ca 2.4Gyr ago, the ocean had little sulphate to support anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and the ocean should have been an important methane source. As atmospheric ...
